Abstract

785.204. Ammunition fuzes. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES SOC. ANON. May 22, 1956 [May 24, 1955], No. 15811/56. Class 9(1) An impact fuze intended to be fitted in the nose of small calibre anti-aircraft projectiles has a body 1 closed by a disc 19 and a base-plug 16 housing a detonator 17 aligned with a firing-pin 13. The pin 13 is held away from the detonator by masses 8 housed in a transverse passage 7 in a sleeve 3 as in Specification 725,821. The centrifugal masses of the earlier Specification, immobilizing an inner sleeve 9 to lock pin 13, are replaced by balls 11. The spring 12 surrounding the pin 13 bears against a shoulder 9a of the sleeve 9 and against the inner surface of a striker weight 18. As the projectile leaves the gun, centrifugal force urges the balls 11 outwards, so preventing rearward movement of sleeve 9, while a spring ring 4 expands and releases sleeve 3. The masses 8 move radially outwards, pushing forward the sleeves 3, 9 and firing pin 13. While the path of the pin is .free, when the masses reach their outermost positions in which they lock the sleeve 3 in its forward position, the fuze then being armed for actuation on impact. After a given time, if impact does not occur, the centrifugal force is insufficient to balance the thrust on the balls 11 due to spring 12 and the balls re-enter their housings in the sleeve 9. Spring 12 then drives the sleeve 9 forward together with the pin 13 to cause self-destruction of the fuze. When the disc 19 is ruptured by the impact, the weight 18 forces the balls 11 to retract and release the spring 9. Specifications 605,683 and 624,811 also are :referred to.
