Abstract
773,570. Projectile fuzes. BOMBRINI PARODI-DELFINO. March 18, 1955 [April 27, 1954], No. 7932/55. Class 9 (1). A sensitive percussion fuze provided with self-destruction means and a delay element preventing arming over an initial portion of the trajectory, has the ignition train of the self-destruction means and/or the delay element within the striker. On firing a projectile provided with the fuze, the percussion cap 2 within the striker 4 sets back by inertia overcoming the resistance of its spring 3 and strikes an apertured member 5 above a delay charge 14 and a compressed gunpowder charge 13. The delay 14 ignites, through a transverse flash passage 6, a charge 15 in a metal latching element 8 which prevents movement of the striker. The explosion of the charge 15 ejects a sealing plate 7 and the element 8 moves out due to centrifugal force thereby releasing the striker 4. A pivoted pawl 10, which blocks the path of the striker, is locked by an inertiaoperated spring or bolt. The striker extends into a recess in the pawl, thus preventing movement of the pawl until acceleration of the projectile ceases. The striker then moves forward freeing the pawl, which is then moved aside by centrifugal force. The fuze is then armed and on impact, the striker is driven inwardly bringing a primer 9 against a perforated needle 12. The primer in turn ignites a detonator (not shown). If the projectile does not hit a target within a given time, the charge 13 burns through and ignites the primer 9 to produce self-destruction of the shell. A metallic disc 1 protects the cap 2, and the body of the fuze may be of moulded synthetic resin or iron.
