Abstract

624,106. Ammunition projectile fuzes. PERRENOUD, G. Oct. 14, 1946, No. 30567. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1945. [Class 9 (i)] A fuze for artillery projectiles comprises a clockwork percussion mechanism which fires the charge after a given time, an instantaneous percussion mechanism functioning on impact, and a delay mechanism which can be brought into operation to enable the effect of the instantaneous mechanism to be retarded. In the construction shown a carrier 13 forming a part of the clockwork mechanism is screwed to the cap 1 and is retained in place on the fuze body 19 by a ring-nut 20. The fuze body has conical spiral grooves 36 each fitted with a ball 17 which fit also in longitudinal grooves of a wheel 15 which has a toothed rim meshing with the first wheel of the clockwork mechanism. The balance wheel 7 of the mechanism is normally locked in place by an inertia device and a centrifugally movable ball 30, and is under the influence of a spring 8. In operation the cap 1 is rotated together with wheel 15 to adjust the length of travel of the balls 17, and on firing a mass 12 sets back to cause pins 16 to penetrate the fuze body thus locking the carrier to the fuze body. At the same time the inertia device and ball 30 release the clockwork mechanism which is driven by the wheel 15 under the influence of the balls 17. After a time, according to the initial setting, one ball 17 enters a passage 21 at the end of one groove 36 and strikes a striker 23 of a percussion cap 31 which communicates by a passage 33 with a relay charge 53 and the detonator of the projectile. The instantaneous percussion mechanism comprises a rod 41, striker 45, percussion cap 47, and passages 49, 48 and 54 leading to the charge 53. The passage 54 is in a plug 51 which can be rotated to bring into operation, as shown, a delay charge 52. In an intermediate position the plug seals off the flash passage 48. A spring-controlled closure 55 for the passages 33, 48, moves one way or the other under centrifugal force to uncover those passages when the projectile is in flight. In a modification the plug 51 is arranged in an inclined direction.
