Abstract
1307445 Projectile fuzes SOC E LACROIX 22 July 1970 [26 Aug 1969] 35412/70 Heading F3A A fuze for spinning projectiles comprises a centrifugal rotor 11 carrying detonators 3 and 4, a firing pin 6 held against upward movement under the action of a spring 10 by a plurality of balls 9, and an inertia sleeve 17 preventing escape of the balls through ports 32. Upon firing a projectile fitted with the fuze, the sleeve 17 sets back owing to inertia forces, thereby shearing a pin 18 and uncovering ports 32. The rate of escape of balls 9 through the ports 32, under the action of spring 10, determines the instant at which the firing pin is withdrawn from the rotor, thereby allowing it to rotate into an armed position under the action of centrifugal force. A pin 33 located in a groove 16 in the rotor retains the rotor in the armed position. At impact, the casing 1 fractures along line 22 and the member 8 shears off at the shoulder 21, thereby facilitating the inward movement of the striker.
