Abstract

848,767. Ammunition fuzes. U.F.A. UNIVERSAL-FINANZIERUNGS-ANSTALT. March 25, 1958 [March 28, 1957], No. 9606/58. Class 9(1). A direct-action percussion fuze having a safety device locking the striker on the initial portion of the trajectory and comprising a clockwork mechanism started by the setback of an inertia mass is provided with a spring-driven shutter obturating the flash from a primer to a detonator, the shutter being locked by the clockwork mechanism until the striker is released. The clockwork comprises a rack 2 stressed by a spring 4 and connected by pinions to a toothed wheel e 4' engaged by a balance-wheel b, Fig. 2. After firing a projectile fitted with the fuze, a mass 8 sets back due to inertia and withdraws a split pin 6 so unlocking the balance-wheel and rack 2. The rack 2 moves transversely, its traverse controlled by the clockwork, until the firing pin, which extends through a keyhole slot 11 arrives at the large end 15 of the slot and can be driven against a primer 21 by a blow on the nose of the fuze. The reduced end of the primer carrier 18 moves into the slot 11 due to the pressure of a conical stop 39 carried by the shutter 37, which has a non-circular aperture 38 engaging an axle 28 extending from a plate 26 housing a detonator 27, the axle being surrounded by a driving spring 33 which drives shutter and plate as a unit. A housing 22 for the plate 26 also contains a delay charge 23 covered by the shutter 37. The forward movement of the carrier 18 frees the stop 39 and the spring 33 drives the shutter 37 until a notch 45 engages an adjustable stop 42, a mounting plate 31 being provided with an arcuate groove 40 along which the stop 39 travels as the shutter rotates. According to the setting of stop 42, the shutter 37 and plate 26 come to rest either with the detonator 27 aligned with the delay 23 or a port 24 is put into communication with the detonator and the flash passage from the primer 21. The base of the fuze is closed by a plug 52 with a thin-walled recess 53 ruptured by the detonator 27 to fire a charge 60. The mass 8 may be locked during transport by a pin extending through the fuze casing 1 to engage a groove in the mass. If the charge 60 is such as can be initiated by the primer, the detonator 27 together with plate 26 may be omitted.
