Abstract

488,044. Projectile fuzes. SCELZO, L. April 19, 1937, No. 11159. Convention date, April 17, 1936. [Class 9 (i)] A safety device for projectile fuzes comprises a spherical mass bored diametrically and rotatable about its centre, the centre of gravity of the mass lying on or substantially on the longitudinal axis of the projectile, said mass being adapted to be brought to its armed position, in which the axis of the diametral bore coincides with the longitudinal axis of the projectile, solely by the centrifugal force due to the rotation of the projectile by the rifling of the gun barrel. As shown in Fig. 1, a spherical cavity between the body 1 of the fuze and the head 2 thereof houses a sphere 3 provided with a diametral hole containing two detonators 4, 5. A spring-actuated pin 6 engages in a small cavity in the sphere so as to keep it locked in the safety position shown in the figure. On discharge, the pin 6 sets back against its spring and, when the pressure of inertia has ceased to operate, the sphere is rotated by centrifugal force so as to bring one of the detonators to the end of the fuze head so that it is operated when the projectile strikes the target. If desired, a single detonator may be employed or the bore in the sphere can be entirely filled with detonating material. Fig. 3 shows an alternative construction employing a slightly modified form of fuze head 9 and in which the detonator 14 is located beneath the sphere 10, the bore 11 of which is empty. The hole in the nose of the fuze head may be empty or may contain a striker.
