Abstract

722,214. Hand grenades; fuzes. PLASTICAS ORAMIL S. L. June 16, 1952 [July 23, 1951], No. 15136/52. Class 9(1). A hand grenade comprises a body 1 containing an explosive charge 6, a fuze casing 5 screwed to one end thereof, the casing 5 enclosing a priming cap 51 and a striker having an opening for the passage of the flash to a detonator tube 7, the striker being normally held in a retracted position by a pin 8 connected to a tape 9 which is wound around the fuze casing and which is protected during storage and transport by a safety cap 2 screwed to the fuze casing. The body 1 is threaded at 49 to receive a closure plug 13 which is perforated to receive the booster charge 7. The latter has a rim 16 for locating it correctly in position, and is held in place by a plug 15. The fuze body 5 is screwed at 11 to the body 1 and at 18 to the cap 2. The main parts of the fuze consist of a priming cap 51 mounted in a movable part 29, Fig. 4, a percussion hammer 33 and associated ball 27, safety device 8, and surfaces 26, 39 and 43 so shaped as to ensure the movement of the hammer and percussion cap towards each other on impact. When the grenade is to be used the cap is first removed by unscrewing. During flight a weight 44 attached to the tape 9 causes the latter to unwind and eventually withdraw the pin 8 from engagement with bores in the fuze body and firing hammer. The latter is then free to strike the cap 51 when the grenade strikes the target. During such movement of the hammer a pin 37 thereon rides down a dot 32 in a casing 29. In the event of a miss-fire the grenade may be safely retrieved by reason of the fact that the pin under the combined axial and torsional movements of the hammer spring 31 has moved into another limb 48 of the slot, thus preventing further axial movements of the hammer.
