Abstract
124,837. Daniels, L. A., and Gardiner, C. A. P. May 3, 1916. Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Relates to grenades adapted to be exploded by percussion, and consists in the combination of a firing-pin, a shock-released catch normally held between a shoulder on the pin and the grenade casing or a plug through which the pin slides, a safetypin normally pressing the catch in the retaining position, and means for holding and releasing the safety-pin. In the grenade shown, a spring-controlled firing-pin 8 is retained in the cocked position by a catch 16 consisting of a resilient metal strip, one end 18 of which is weighted, Fig. 4. The catch 16 is normally held in position by a radial pin 20, which a spring 22 tends to throw outwardly. A tape 23 having a weight 25 at its outer end is bound round the neck of the grenade so as to hold the pin 20 in place, and is adapted to be secured by a split-pin 30 or the equivalent. When the grenade is discharged, after the weighted end of the tape has been freed, the tape unwinds and releases the safety-pin 20 during flight. The arrangement is such that the tape does not unwind sufficiently to arm the fuse if the grenade is accidentally dropped. A rod 33 may be screwed into the base plug 2 to enable the grenade to be fired from a rifle.
