Abstract

561,894. Arming devices for bombs, projectiles or the like. HEBARD, H. C., and IMBER RESEARCH, Ltd. March 3, 1941, Nos. 2850 and 7327. [Class 9 (i)]. A safety arming device for a bomb, projectile, or the like, comprises a striker held against movement by balls in a cylindrical ex. tension of the striker, and a wedge adapted to be released by a windvane to release the balls so that i he striker is moved by a spring. The striker a is prevented from movement by a hand-released pin c and also by balls h disposed in recesses g in a cylinder f attached to the striker-rod e. Coact. ing with these balls, to cause them to engage a shoulder i on the casing, is a wedge j normally retained in locking position by a screw k adapted to be moved axially by a wind-vane m, which can screw along the screw k until the nut n<1> on the vane abuts against the head of the screw, whereupon the vane and screw rotate together to release the wedge. If the angle of the wedge is less than the critical angle, the wedge is not forced back to release the balls by the action of the plunger spring c until impact occurs, but if the angle is greater than the critical angle then the force of the plunger spring forces the wedge upwardly by means of the balls as soon as the wedge is released and firing occurs at this time. The detonator d may fire the charge directly or through a time fuze. A protection cap p is held over the wind vane normally by spring arms r, but is released by hand or automatically at the moment of discharge.
