Abstract

1,260,109. Projectile fuzes. K. DIEHL. 30 June, 1970, No. 31646/70. Heading F3A. A fuze for a hand grenade comprises a detonator 22, Fig. 1, which is moved into a live position adjacent a secondary charge 27 when a fusible element 18, securing a displaceable detonator carrier 19 to a fixed part 14, is softened by the heat from a combustible delay charge 13, safety means being provided to prevent ignition of the secondary charge so long as the carrier is not displaced into the live position. The safety means includes a flap valve 17 or (34), Fig. 4 (not shown), which is held closed by an insulating disc 17 displaceable with the carrier. In the live position of the carrier the valve is no longer held closed and is opened by an igniting jet from the charge 13. Additional safety is provided by a member 25 which prevents ignition of the secondary charge if the detonator is ignited in any position other than the live position. The charge 13 is ignitable by a percussion cap 10. A spring-striker 9 for the percussion cap is held at safe by a handle 4 which is thrown off by a spring plate 6 on removal of a safety pin 5. A perforated plate (32) Fig. 3 (not shown), may be provided beneath the percussion cap to prevent it igniting the detonator if the charge 13 is inadvertently omitted. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the fusible element 18 is softened by a charge 39 and the detonator is ignited by the flash from a separate charge 40 passing along the bore 42 of a hollow striker 45. The striker is pendulously mounted in a plate 44 and is axially and radially restrained by the detonator carrier, but, on its displacement into the live position is free to swing the charge 40 against the wall of the chamber 38 to effect ignition. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the wall of the chamber is coated with the igniting charge (48). A flap valve 17 and a member 25 act as safety devices as before.
