Abstract
577,130. Aerial bombs. DOBREMYSL, J. Nov. 3, 1939, No. 29274. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] Relates to bombs suspended by parachutes for providing protection against enemy aircraft of the kind in which the bomb is armed by the tension in the suspension means. According to the invention, the safety device, rendering the bomb " live " only after launching, locks the firing member of the bomb permanently in the inoperative position after the pull on the suspension has once been relaxed. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the bomb 1 with its parachute 4 is mounted in a sleeve 2 which acts as a cartridge case or barrel for projecting the bomb from aircraft as described in Specification 577,131. The sleeve contains a propellant charge 3. The firing pin 7 of the fuze and the parachute are retained by a spring-urged lever 14 automatically released when the bomb leaves the sleeve. When the bomb is suspended, the piston 5 is pulled out against the pressure of a spring 6 and releases the upper end of a pendulum lever 9 movable in the firing pin, the lower end engaging a fixed bar 10. When the bomb is impacted by enemy aircraft the lever 9 swings away from the bar 10 and the firing pin is then moved by its spring 8 to fire the detonating cap 11 for the explosive charge 30. The bomb is rendered harmless, when the bomb reaches the ground and the suspension pull relaxes, by the return of the piston 5 which is locked in safe position by a radial spring bolt 18. This bolt before arming rests against a ring 16 which rises with the piston and is retained in raised position by inward movement of the bolt which on return of the piston can move still further inwards to lock the piston. In a modification, not shown, the lever 14 has an extension engaging the pistonrod of a spring-pressed piston moving in a liquid cylinder. The liquid used may be inflammable. The piston-rod is moved after a predetermined time to a position for locking the firing pin. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the pendulum control is replaced by a tail rod x on the piston 32 which controls the movement of balls 35 locking a firing pin 37 which acts by momentum on impact.
