Abstract

1,022,437. Projectile fuzes. S. A. MEFINA. Nov. 23, 1964 [Feb. 7, 1964], No. 47497/64. Heading F3A. A clockwork fuze for rotated projectiles comprises plates 1-9 housing the clockwork mechanism and a primer carrier 12 pivoted on a spindle 13 between plates 1 and 2. Before launching the projectile, the carrier 12 is urged by a spring 14 to a position in which the primer 10 is out of alignment with a firing pin 15, while after launching a weight 16 on the carrier due to the centrifugal force causes the carrier to rotate into the armed position. Movement of the carrier is delayed by a bolt 17 until a toothed sector 18 housed in the plate 3 has rotated through a predetermined angle. Sector 18 carries a weight which under centrifugal force causes the sector to rotate. A collar 25 on the pin 15 bears on the edges of an arcuate slot in the sector. As the pin rides along the slot, a spring 27 abutting plate 5 holds the collar against the sector. The bolt 17 consists of an eccentric extension of the spindle 19 on which the sector is mounted, the extension having a flatted surface to free the carrier, when the sector has rotated through a predetermined angle. Sector 18 meshes with a spindle 29 carrying a gear-wheel 31 of a clockwork train 31-35, the escapement 35 of the train being regulated by a balance wheel 37. Balance wheel 37 is immobilized, as in Specification 688,883, by pins 43 depending from two arcuate levers 40 pivoted on the plate 9. When the projectile is fired from a rifled gun, centrifugal force causes the levers 40 to move away from each other and hence pins 43 release the balance wheel 47. The sector 18 also begins to rotate, its movement being regulated by the clockwork. When the sector 18 has moved through a predetermined angle, the bolt 17 releases the carrier 12, which then swings until the primer 10 is aligned with pin 15, a spring 45 then driving the primer into engagement with an opening 47 in the plate 1 to lock the primer in the armed position. When the sector reaches its final position, the pin 15 leaves the slot and the spring 27 drives the pin 15 against the primer 10. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 688,883.
