Projectile fuzes.-Relates to percussion fuzes of the kind comprising a primer 7 and a firing pin 1 kept apart before discharge by a safety member 8 released by the set back of an inertia bolt 12 on discharge and then moved outwards by centrifugal force during flight. According to the invention, the safety member 8 is connected by a train of gear wheels to an escapement wheel against which an eccentrically disposed anchor 17 bears by centrifugal force, thereby causing a delay in the outward movement of the safety member proportional to the speed of rotation of the projectile, so that this member does not complete its stroke until the projectile is in steady flight; moreover, the end of the safety member is tapered at 11 to allow the firing pin 1 under the action of air pressure to approach the primer 7 gradually at the end of the arming stroke of the safety member. The impact occurs and firing takes place sensitively and without delay. The firing pin 1 may be mounted in a thimble 2 against a spring 4, the thimble being itself mounted against a weak spring 21. The thimble is protected by a cap 18 and the inertia bolt 12 is normally locked by a pin 19 attached to a screw plug 22, or to a segment lying in a groove in the side of the fuze body. These restraints must be removed before the fuze is used. Premature, impact on the thimble 2 before the safety member 8 has released the firing pin 1 compresses the springs 4, 21 without causing premature explosion. After arming is completed, the fuze is fired on impact by the blow on the thimble 2 or the momentum of the primer 7. In a modification, the primer 7 is fixed to the fuze body, and the thimble 2 is attached to the firing pin 1 without the interposition of the spring 4.
