Abstract

429,724. Projectile fuzes. REMONDY, L. E., 42, Rue d'Anjou, Paris. Sept. 17, 1934, No. 26701. Convention date, Oct. 9, 1933. [Class 9 (i)] The direct impact striker of a percussion fuze comprises a front part c<2>, Fig. 1, and a rear part c<1> normally rigidly connected together, for example by being made in one piece or by being fastened together by a transverse shearing pin, and adapted to operate as follows : On impact, the striker is released from the fuze body a, for example by shearing a pin d, and is driven in, then the front part c<2> is arrested by a shoulder a<1> of the fuze body and the inertia of the rear part c<1> causes it to break away from the front part and to fire the fixed percussion cap b. In a modification, Fig. 6, the inertia of the rear part c<1> causes it to break its attachment g to the front part c<2> at the same time as the main pin d is broken. In another modification, a separate inertia plunger is provided to cause the break between the front and rear parts. The striker c<1>, c<2> may be attached to a cap m, Fig. 11, held on the fuze body a by a stud m<1> in engagement with a groove a<3>, the cap m being locked in known manner by a collar n adapted to be withdrawn when a bomb fitted with the fuze is dropped. A centrifugal safety bolt o, Fig. 12, may be provided for the striker ; and an extension p may be formed on the head of the striker to be crushed by a strong target after the main pin d has been sheared, to ensure the above mentioned operation. This operation involves a delay of the explosion of the bomb, and the percussion cap may be situated at a comparatively long distance from the striker and may act directly as the detonator of the main charge of the bomb. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the percussion cap b is held forward by a resilient cushion h of felt or cork or by a spring and can thus set back during acceleration to a safe place where it cannot be reached by the striker. In still another modification, the percussion cap is carried by the rear part of the striker and the firing-pin is fixed to the fuze body in place of the percussion cap. Specification 263,098, [Class 9 (i)], is referred to for a somewhat similar fuze.
