Abstract

653,547. Ammunition projectile fuzes. VERWALTUNGSGES DER WERK-ZENGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Nov. 2, 1948, No. 28472. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1947. [Class 9 (i)] The striker 12 is normally prevented from igniting the primer 14 by a transversely slidable body 6 which is forced to one side of an accommodating recess in the fuze body by a spring 15 but which, during flight, is moved to an armed position after the escape therefrom of a heavy, liquid material 8. Such escape of the liquid material, which may be mercury, displaces the centre of gravity of the body in such manner that it moves by centrifugal force to the armed position against the action of the spring 15. In the construction shown the recess accommodating the mercury has an aperture 9 normally closed by a diaphragm 10 ; in flight the mercury pierces the diaphragm and enters an annular cavity in the fuze body. The striker is normally prevented from moving towards the primer by a shoulder 13 protruding into a slot 11, but is free to pass through the slot when the shoulder moves out of its path. A further recess in the body contains a lead filling 7, but in a modification this is dispensed with.
