Abstract

1,249,875. Projectile fuzes. HONEYWELL Inc. 17 Oct., 1968 [30 Oct., 1967], No. 49388/68. Heading F3A. An arming mechanism for a spinning projectile comprises a housing 12 with a cavity 20 containing both a liquid and an arming member 14 which has buoyancy in respect of the liquid, and, by virtue of liquid pressure arising as a consequence of centrifugal force is movable perpendicularly towards the spin axis against the force of biasing means 15. The arming member comprises a hollow piston provided with a seal 17 and carrying a detonator 18. Centrifugal locking means 24 and 25 or a set-back lock-pin (not shown) secures the piston in its safe position. On firing a projectile fitted with the mechanism, the locking means are released and centrifugal force pushes the liquid through an orifice 19 and to the rear face of the piston, whereby the piston slowly moves towards the spin axis. This movement is accelerated when the seal 17 reaches grooves 40 and 41 and permits more rapid fluid flow to the rear face of the piston. In the armed position the detonator 18 is aligned with a firing pin. The fluid in the cavity may be silicone.
