Abstract
1,216,933. Projectile fuzes. WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON BUHRLE A.G. 3 Dec., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 57437/68. Heading F3A. A fuze for a projectile comprises a firing pin 28, Fig. 2, having a cylindrical lateral extension 31 and a portion 33 of reduced diameter, and an L-shaped sealing ring 37 compressed against the wall of the bore 30 in which the firing pin is movable, the thickness of the ring in the uncompressed state being greater than the gap between the wall of the bore 30 and the extension 31. The sealing ring is made of P.V.C. or rubber. A fusible ring 39 formed with air passages 40 retains the firing pin in a safe position. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the fusible ring is formed with air passages in each end face and is separated from the sealing ring by a metal ring. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the sealing ring is compressed between the bore wall and a metal ring separating the fusible ring and the sealing ring. The sealing ring is bent into an L-shape by allowing the ring to overlap the extension 31 as indicated in chain lines and then drawing the housing 29 over the extension. The lower end of the firing pin holds a centrifugal rotor 13, Fig. 1, in a safe position. Upon launching a projectile fitted with the fuze, the fusible ring 39, Fig. 2, is melted by air flowing through the passages 40, and the firing pin, thereby freed, is lifted by the rotor as it rotates under the action of centrifugal force. The firing pin is driven against a detonator 14 either at impact or when the force of a spring 20 overcomes the centrifugal force acting on balls 26, which ever is the earlier.
