Abstract

1,213,865. Projectile fuzes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 26 Jan., 1968, No. 4278/68. Heading F3A. Fuze for a spinning projectile provided with a safety, arming, and self-destroying arrangement comprises a body 10; a firing pin 32; locking balls 83; a spherical rotor 50, e.g. of aluminium or plastics, housing a detonating charge 54; a viscous damping medium (not shown) between the rotor and wall 46a; and split locking rings 68 and 70. The surface of the rotor may be roughened to cause turbulence in the damping medium as it rotates, and the viscosity of the damping medium may be increased by the incorporation of fine metal or PTFE particles. On firing a projectile fitted with the fuze, the striker pin is moved forwards as the balls 83 move outwardly under centrifugal force along the surfaces 86a to a position where they lock the firing pin against rearward movement. Simultaneously, rings 68 and 70 are radially expanded and permanently deformed into corresponding recesses, whereby the ring 68 no longer obstructs the firing pin, and the rotor is freed and precesses to align the detonating charge 54 with a booster 58 at a rate determined by the damping medium. When the rate of spin of the projectile drops below a certain value, i.e., on striking or overshooting the target, the balls 83 move inwardly to free the striking pin which is then driven by a spring 40 against the detonating charge.
