Abstract

624,811. Projectile fuzes. BREVETS AEROMECANIQUES SOC: ANON. June 26, 1947, No. 16916. Convention date, July 11, 1945. [Class 9 (i)] A percussion fuze of the kind in which a percussion head 14 is disposed in front of the striker 15 is characterised in that means are provided to resist the backward movement of the head 14 and that the movement of the striker is controlled by a selfdestruction device including a centrifugal element 26 which engages with a ramp 32 to retard temporarily the displacement of the striker by the means actuating it for selfdestruction. In the construction shown, a spring-urged sleeve 24 bears against a flange 28 of the striker 15 and the flange bears against two weights 23 which are located in a housing 22 of an outer sleeve 17. When the projectile is in flight, centrifugal force serves (a) to open a ring 19 thereby permitting forward movement of the sleeve 17, (b) to drive outwards the two weights 23 thus, by surfaces 29, to cause the weights to move the sleeve 17 forwards, and (c) to open out a split ring 26 so that it bears against the ramp 32 of sleeve 17. The weights are now clear of the flange 28, but the firing pin is not driven towards the detonator 33 until impact occurs, or until centrifugal force drops sufficiently to enable the spring to overcome the holding force of the ring 26. On impact, the disc 13 is broken and the head 14 is sheared by the shoulder 34 and is driven in to act upon the striker 15. In modifications, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), a Range on the stem of the head 14 is, in one case, the part which is sheared, and in the other case it is a pin which projects through a slot in the stem. Specification 605,683 is referred to.
