Abstract

727,493. Projectile fuzes. VERWALTUNGSGES DER WERKZEUGMASCHINEN FABRIK OERLIKON. July 4, 1952 [July 7, 1951]. No. 16923/52. Class 9(1). Relates to ammunition projectile fuzes of the kind comprising a striker 2 which is displaced longitudinally by the action of centrifugal force on weights 4, a booster charge 14 at the rear end of the fuze casing 1, and an intermediate member 8 having a box carrying the detonator 12, this member being rotatable so that the box can be brought into line with the striker and the detonator in communication with the booster. According to the invention the striker normally locks the member 8 against rotation, and at the forward end of the fuze there is provided an element 16 which is melted by heat resulting from its passage through the air, this element serving to lock the striker against displacement until it has been melted during flight. In the construction shown the member 8 is of spherical form and has trunnions 11 which engage in slots 9a of a socket member 9. On firing, the inertia forces cause the striker to bear firmly upon the member 8, and the resulting friction between the latter and its seating opposes rotation of the member 8 to the armed position. When the element 16 melts the action of the weights 4 on surfaces 10a draws the striker forwards and thereby allows the member 8 to rotate to the armed position. The member is located in the armed position by a ball 13 which engages the rear edge of a second socket member 10. Detonation takes place on impact or when the centrifugal forces on the weights are insufficient to prevent the spring 6 from driving the striker against the detonator.
