Abstract
602,355. Projectile fuzes. LIPPERT, H.. and BURRI, H. July 131. 1945, No. 18020. [Class 9 (i)] A combined impact and delay action selfdestroying fuze has a firing pin 10 held inoperative against the loading spring 8 of the sleeve 7 in which is is pivotally mounted, by the frictional resistance between inclined faces 14 on the fuze body and shoulders on the centrifugal masses' 12, on the pin. When centrifugal force ceases or on impact due to the momentum of the sleeve 7, this frictional resistance is overcome and the striker fires the detonator 3. Safety centrifugal bolts 21 and a spring 22 normally lock the sleeve 7 until the shell is fired. The pin 10 is made in the form of shears, the legs of which, when centrifugal force has fallen, are forced together to pass up the fixed tube 16. A second stronger spring 20 is normally locked by balls 18 to the tube 16. When a groove 23 in the sleeve 7 moves opposite the balls, on firing movement of the pin and sleeve, the balls are released and allow the second spring 20 to add its force to that of the spring 8. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the firing pin 24 is pivoted at 28 on a sleeve 27 and engages an inclined face 26 by means of a centrifugal mass 25. The sleeve 27 is locked by balls 37 to a second sleeve 29 on which a weak spring 30 acts. When the pin and sleeves move forward, the balls 37 are released into a groove 31 and the stronger spring 34 and sleeve 27 are released to operate the striker 24. A modification for a nose fuze is similar to the modification shown in Fig. 3, but has only a single spring and impact operates the striker directly.
