Abstract

733,399. Ammunition projectiles and fuzes therefor. SOC. ANON. BELGE DE MECANIQUE ET D'ARMEMENT. Sept. 9, 1953 [Sept. 15, 1952], No. 25004/53. Class 9(1). A rifle grenade containing a hollow charge 3 and fitted with a ballistic cap 1 and a tubular tail 5 equipped with stabilising fins 6 is provided with a base fuze housed in a chamber 7 intermediate the grenade body and the tail 5. The chamber 7 has an extension 9 around which is an annular space 10 to receive a firing tube 11, Fig. 2, attached to the rifle. The extension, which has a thickened base 12, houses a detonator 8 above which a hollow member 15, closed by an obturator 16, is held by balls 24 housed in a fixed sleeve 23. The balls are locked in position by a safety device comprising two annular members 17, 19 held apart by a spring 18. On discharging the grenade, the annular member 17 sets back due to inertia so that claws 13 enter a groove in the member 19 to lock the members together. As the grenade decelerates the locked inertia members move forward together guided by slides 21 projecting from the member 19 into zig-zag grooves 22 in the sleeve 23. The balls 24 then escape freeing the detonator, which then moves forward until the obturator 16 contacts a striker 14 resting on a cushion 26, e.g. of paraffin wax, supported by the cavity liner 4. On impact, the striker 14 penetrates through the obturator 16 and initiates the detonator 8 to fire the charge 3. In a modification the inertia member 17 surrounds the member 19 and under the action of a spring locks a ball in position to secure the member 19 until set-back of the outer member releases the ball. In a further modification a single inertia member locks the balls 24, the member being provided with two grooves, each having two branches. Fixed slides extend into the grooves to give the inertia member a reciprocating motion and delay arming of the fuze as in Specification 620,875. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 620,875.
