Abstract
725,821. Projectile fuzes. BREVETS AEROMECHANIQUES SOC. ANON. Feb. 12, 1953 [Feb. 27, 1952], No. 4017/53. Class 9(1). A shell 1 containing a charge 2, which may be incendiary, is provided with an armour-piercing nose 3 of hard metal to which is attached an ignition device 4. The device 4 comprises a percussion fuze having means for locking the firing pin 17 which is released only by penetration of the shell into a target having some predetermined minimum resistance. Furthermore after release of the locking means, due to inertia holding means prevent movement of the firing pin until the shell has passed through the target. The ignition device is provided with a sleeve 6 held against forward movement by an elastic ring 8 bearing against a shoulder 9 and against rearward movement by two cylindrical masses 12 having frusto-conical ends bearing on a frusto-conical surface 19 of a plug 20. A slidably mounted inner sleeve 13 houses in a groove 14 a ring 15 divided into section, each section forming a centrifugal mass. A spring 16 holds the inner sleeve in engagement with a flange 18 on the firing pin 17, the pin being held by the masses 12, as on the left-hand side of Fig. 2. After firing the shell, the centrifugal force due to rotation causes the masses 15 to move outwardly and bear against the inner surface of sleeve 6, which has a frusto-conical bearing surface corresponding to similar surfaces of the masses 15. The ring 8 moves outwardly into the recess 10, thus allowing the masses 12 to move upwardly against the action of spring 16 and outwardly in the openings 11 to take up the position shown on the right hand side of Fig. 2. The firing pin is then unlocked and the outer sleeve locked in the forward position. On impact the centrifugal force on the masses 15 is reduced and inertia causes a forward movement of the sleeve 6 relative to the inner sleeve 13, so that the masses 15 are thrust inwards and the inner sleeve 13 released. The stressed spring 16 then forces the firing pin 17 into contact with a primer 24 to initiate the detonator. Specification 624,811 is referred to.
