Abstract

608,553. Projectile fuzes. SCHWEIZER, P. Feb. 26, 1946, No. 6035. [Class 9 (i)] Shells for large calibre automatic guns have in addition to an inertia-operated base fuze and a self-destroying device which effects detonation of the base fuze if the shell fails to strike, a direct impact needle extending from the nose to the region of the base fuze. In the form shown, the explosive charge 17 is contained in a thin - walled casing 1, reinforced at the base by a body 2 containing a base fuze 6, tracer composition 18 and detonator casing 13. The base striker pin 5 is hinged at 8 to a spring-pressed slider retained by pin 4 and the tail 10 of the striker engages a fixed incline 11. The base fuze is armed by the rotation of the shell, the pin 4 being released by the opening of split ring 3 by centrifugal force. On impact, or for self destruction when centrifugal force lessens on failure of impact, the striker 5 disengages the incline 11 and strikes the detonator 14. For instantaneous detonation on impact, when the nose of the shell is crushed, the needle 16, attached to the nose and extending through the explosive charge, strikes the detonator 15 of the base fuze. The body 2 serves to reinforce the thin casing in the vicinity of the driving band 19.
