Abstract

955,206. Projectile fuzes. DIRECTOR GENERAL OF FORSVARETS FABRIKSSTYRELSE. April 2, 1962 [Oct. 31, 1961], No. 12640/62. Heading F3A. A projectile impact-operated fuze comprises an annular casing 3 which may be of hardened aluminium alloy and which contains a primer charge 2 such as lead azide plus tetrazene and an auxiliary charge 4 of an explosive such as tetryl. The casing 3 protrudes in front of fuze body 8 and is closed at its rear by an apertured plug 5, the latter being held within the forward end of a guide bushing 24. A booster 11, 21 having charges 10, 20 and joined together by a bushing 14 is contained within the guide bushing 24, the portion 11 having a solid metal part 7 which enters the aperture in plug 5. Externally of the guide bushing 24 is a sleeve 12 which is releasably attached by a looking device 6 to a protective cover 1. Fig. 1 shows the fuze in the unarmed position with balls 16, located in slots 13 of guide bushing 24 and apertures 15 of sleeve 12, pressed against a locking sleeve 18 by a spring 22 via a conical shoulder 17. On launching the projectile, set-back of the booster 11, 21 and of locking sleeve 18 against the action of a friction spring 19 causes the balls to move radially inwardly adjacent the top of bushing 14. On cessation of positive acceleration, spring 22 urges forward the unit comprising booster 11, 21, sleeve 12 and cover 1, the balls 16 still protruding sufficiently into the apertures 15 to move the sleeve 12 forward. When armed, the charge 10 is encircled by auxiliary charge 4 and cover 1 is thrown clear of the projectile after being released by movement of locking device 6 forward of fuze body 8. The guide bushing 24 together with casing 3 is free to move forwardly until engagement between a shoulder 23 with locking sleeve 18 occurs. In another embodiment the outer wall of casing 3 is bent over to form a double thickness inner wall at the forward part of charge 2 and a modification of this embodiment is shown in Fig. 4 where a closure 31 is also provided. In this form forward movement of booster 11, 21 is braked due to compression of entrapped air.
