Abstract

897,113. Ammunition fuzes. VERWALTUNGSGESELLSCHAFT DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Feb. 25, 1960, No. 6591/60. Class 9(1). A percussion fuze, more particularly for unrotated projectiles, which can be arranged to operate instantaneously on impact or after a delay, has a casing 1 with an axial passage containing a relay train 26 aligned with a booster 10 and a firing pin 4 carried by a cap 3 slidable in the fuze head 2. A hood 6 of resilient plastic material covers the cap. The pin 4 extends into an opening in a switch 31 and is aligned with a blind bore 14 in a transverse slide 9 during transport. By rotating the member 31 through 90 degrees from the position of Fig. 1, the pin 4 is rendered inoperative and the fuze set for delayed action by a firing pin 28, Fig. 5. After firing the projectile, a detent 18 and a surrounding sleeve 16 set back due to inertia and release the slide 9. The slide, thrust by a spring 15, then moves across the fuze, its movement being braked by a rack 22 and pinion 23 controlled by an escapement 25, until a bore containing a detonator 11 is aligned with the pin 4 and the train 26. The fuze is then ready for operation on impact if the switch 31 is correctly set. With the switch set for delayed operation, after impact, sleeves 37, 41 co-operating with balls 40 to lock the pin 28, Fig. 5, are forced apart, the forward sleeve entering a bore 12 in the slide 9. A spring 39 then drives the striker 28 against a detonator 13, which by way of a groove 7a, fires the detonator 11 and the train 28 as before.
