Abstract

999,344. Ammunition fuzes. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S.A. Jan. 29, 1964 [Feb. 7, 1963], No. 3810/64. Heading F3A. A percussion fuze for rotated projectiles comprising self-destruction means has a casing 1 to be screwed into the base of a projectile, which casing houses a partitioning member 3, 3a through which projects a firing pin 4. The pin 4 has a flanged head 4a which houses locking balls 9 resting against inclined surfaces 10, 11. Before firing the projectile, the pin 4 is held in the retracted position, Fig. 1, by halfrings 6 bearing against the flange 4a, the halfrings being held together by a spirally-wound strip 7 surrounded by a split sleeve 8. On firing the projectile, the centrifugal force due to spin causes the parts 6, 7, 8 to spread outwardly (Fig. 3) and so free the forward path of the pin 4. While the projectile is accelerating, the pin is still held by the balls 9, which due to centrifugal force bear against the surface 10. If impact then occurs the inertia of the firing pin counteracts the centrifugal force and the striker spring 5 drives the pin 4 forward to initiate the fuze. If impact is delayed, the pin 4 moves when the centrifugal force becomes insufficient to counteract the spring 5. To reduce the sensitivity of the fuze to impact against insubstantial objects, so that it remains armed for tripping by a more violent impact, a braking weight 12 is provided, which can slide in the flange 4a. The second bearing surface 11 is formed at the forward end of this weight and when the projectile is fired, the weight is forced rearwardly against the casing 1. On impact the weight 12 thrusts the balls 9 against surface 10 unless centrifugal force has decreased sufficiently for the balls to have moved away from surface 10 and towards the axis, in which case the weight 12 reinforces the effect of the spring 5.
