Abstract
551,916. Fuzes for projectiles. IMBER, J., and IMBER RESEARCH, Ltd. June 11, 1941, No. 1720/43. [Class 9 (i)] A fuze for aerial bombs or projectiles and of the kind in which relative movement between a striker pin and a percussion cap causes detonation such movement being normally restrained, and in which a deformable disc is interposed between the striker and the cap to prevent detonation during normal handling or usage, has the disc of sufficient strength to resist deformation for small falls, but when impact with the ground or a target occurs after a fall from a predetermined height, the disc is so distorted as to cause detonation. The shell or bomb cap 11 contains a fixed but adjustable striking pin 21, the blunt nose 13 of which projects into a cavity 16 in the cap into which fits the end of a hollow conical body 5 containing an explosive charge 9, a detonating cap 7, and a fuze 8. A deformable disc 23 is interposed between the nose of the striking pin and the detonating cap and movement of the charge and cap towards the pin is normally restrained by projection. 22 on the body 5 which engages the edge of a conical recess in the nose of the projectile or by a spring surrounding the detonator. For small falls the disc is only slightly distorted such as to the shape shown in Fig. 3, but for greater falls, the disc is caused to assume the shape shown in Fig. 5 so that the detonator is struck and the fuze fired.
