Abstract

261,232. Matthews, W. C. March 4, 1926. Cylinders, pipes for; exhaust, cooling; forcing apparatus for gases.-In order to withdraw exhaust gases from aeroplane or like engines by suction, the gases are led to a region behind the line of maximum camber of a cambered body. In one form, the exhaust: pipe opens directly into a hollow metal plane having outlet pcrts in the upper surface behind the camber. In a modication, Fig. 2, the exhaust manifold 1 is connected to a pipe 5 lying along the inside of the plane 3 and enclosed in an outer pipe 8, through which air current s cauised to flow by the movement of the aeroplane, in order to protect the plane from the heat of the exhaust. Small outlet pipes 7 connect the pipe 5 to ports 4 in the plane 3. In a modification, an exhaust pipe is formed as a small hollow aerofoil 11, Fig. 3, with outlet holes or slots 4<1> in the upper surface. Such aerofoils may be arranged horizontally or vertically and tapered at the end remote from the exhaust manifold.
