Abstract
A solid mixture of a soluble iron salt and an alkali carbonate is added to water in a proportion of not less than 150 parts by weight of the mixture to 10000 parts of water, the amount of alkali carbonate being equivalent to or in excess of the iron salt. The suspension is oxidized, if in the ferrous condition, by a suitable oxidant such as air. The ferric hydroxide is readily separated from the liquid or from other solid matter suspended in the liquid, for instance from the sulphur liberated when the suspension is used for removing sulphuretted hydrogen from gases.
