Abstract
334,709. Laporte, Ltd., B., Weber, I. E., and Slater, V. W. Sept. 5, 1929. Barium carbonate, substantially free from sulphur compounds, is prepared by the addition of barium sulphide, barium sulphydrate or other barium sulphur compound to a solution of carbon dioxide or barium bicarbonate, in such amount that there is always carbon dioxide or barium bicarbonate present. In an example of a discontinuous method, a 20 per cent solution of barium sulphide, and carbon dioxide is added alternately to a solution of carbon dioxide. According to a continuous method, carbon dioxide and barium sulphide are added simultaneously. The carbon dioxide is not necessarily pure, and flue gas may be used under pressure, if desired. The necessary conditions are observed by maintaining the pH value below 7. Hydrogen sulphide evolved may be burnt to sulphur or sulphur dioxide.
