Abstract

117,483. Annable, H. W. C. July 13, 1917. Magnesium chloride and carbonate. - Magnesium is separated from a mixture of magnesium and calcium carbonates, such as decomposed dolomite, by heating the said mixed carbonates, suspended in water, under pressure with the requisite amount of calcium, barium, or strontium chloride. The magnesium chloride thus formed may then be precipitated as carbonate or as oxide which latter may be further treated in suspension with carbon dioxide to produce carbonate or hydrated carbonate of magnesium. According to the Provisional Specification, the heating with an alkaline earth chloride need not be conducted under pressure.
