Air supply, heating.- Cement clinker from a rotary kiln is cooled and hydiated by circulating a current of air and steam through the cooler 2 and an evaporator or steam generator 7. The steam produced in the generator enters wholly or in part into the circulating current in order to maintain its required water content, the surplus being discharged at 8, either to atmosphere or otherwise. Control is effected by varying the speed of the fan 10 and the level of the water around the tubes 6. The circulating current may be divided between the generator and a heater for the combustion air of the furnace.
