Abstract

695,791. Drying apparatus. THOMAS, R. H. March 1, 1951 [March 7, 1950], No. 5794/50. Class 34 (ii) In apparatus for drying sheets of rubber &c. 9 hung in a chamber 11 through which air circulates and having an air drier, the air circulating means comprises a duct 14 in which is mounted one or more fans 37, 38, the duct having an upper portion 13 and a lower portion 33 within the chamber and extending between a pair of opposite walls 16 thereof, the portions 13, 33 of the duct passing through one of the walls and being connected together outside the chamber by an intermediate portion of the duct 14 which houses the air drier. The ducts 13, 33 have orifices 20, 36 which increase in diameter towards the ends of the duct. The air drier consists of cooling means 25 and heater 26 constituted by heat exchangers 27, the cooling means 25 being supplied with cooled brine from a refrigerator unit having expansion coil 46 or with cold water. Alternatively the vessel 27 may be replaced by a cold water shower. The heater 26 is supplied with waste heat from the cooling water of an internal combustion engine 41 which supplies electrical power through a generator 40 and the exhaust pipe 51 of the engine may further heat the air. The fans exhaust air from the chamber through duct 13 and propel it through the cooling means where the contained water is condensed and the air then passes over the heater and back into the chamber through duct 33.
