Abstract

571,292. Cooling gases and liquids; drying gases. CLIMATOR, Ltd., and BERLOWITZ, M. Sept. 11, 1943, No. 14938. [Classes 34 (i), 64 (i), and 64 (iii)] In an arrangement for cooling gases or liquids in which a gas, before being cooled in a wet cooling stage by heat exchange in one chamber between a liquid and an unsaturated gas, is first cooled in a dry cooling stage by indirect contact in another chamber with a gas or liquid cooled in, and derived from, the wet cooling stage, the two chambers are arranged one on top of the other. Since cooling in the wet stage results from evaporation of the liquid, cooling of the liquid also occurs. In one form, dry air drawn from a room and from the open through inlets 38, 39 is circulated by fans 25, 25' around tubes 31 in a heat exchanger 20, and then through the wet cooling chamber 21 over bodies 35 over which water from a reservoir 29 is circulated by a centrifugal pump 26. The cooled air passes between baffles 28 which trap drops of water, partly to outlets controlled by dampers 30 and partly through the annular passage 27 to the tubes 31 and outlet 34 which discharges into the open. To keep the air passing through the tubes 31 as cool as possible, water may be sprayed through them from jets 36, or supplied to them by wicks from a tank at a higher level. The tubes may contain filling bodies, e.g., of ceramic material or wood or metal scrap, resting on grids, or may contain one or more helical baffles. The air to be cooled may first be dried by being passed through a chamber containing silica gel, a solution of magnesium chloride or other drying agent. This chamber may be co-axial with the heat exchanger 20 and the chamber 21, and may be similar in construction to the latter, with magnesium chloride or other drying solution in circulation instead of water. Cooled water can be drawn from the reservoir 29. or a separate supply of water may be cooled by the cooled air. Specifications 434,671, 448,538, and 456.771. [all in Group XII], are referred to.
