785,868. Unit air conditioning apparatus. SULZER FRERES SOC.-ANON. April 16, 1956 [April 15, 1955], No. 11462/56. Class 137. An air conditioning apparatus for a room comprises a housing 1 having a compartment 2 which receives compressed air from an opening 7 in a distribution passage 3 contained therein and passes it, at high velocity through expansion nozzles 8 formed in its upper face, into a mixing chamber 9, the ejection effect thus produced sucking air from the room into the housing 1 through side wall apertures 10, 11 and an aperture in the bottom wall, and over two elements 14a, 14b of a heat exchanger to mix with the fresh air in the chamber 9 for discharge through an opening 13 in the top of the casing. The distribution passage 3 is connected to a source of conditioned air under pressure by a pipe, not shown, which is controlled by a valve. Felt linings 6, to dampen noise, are fitted on the inside of the sheet metal body 5 of the compartment 2 as well as on both sides of the passage 3. The mixing chamber 9 is flanked by the two heat exchange elements 14a, 14b which consist of pipe coils 16 connected together by a pipe 18 and in series with supply and discharge pipes, not shown, for a liquid heating, or cooling medium, the supply pipe being provided with a manually operable valve. The pipe coils 16 of the two elements 14a, 14b, provided with vertical fins 17 whose edges are inclined with respect to the adjacent walls of the housing, may be connected in parallel. A condensate trough 22 is formed on the top of the compartment 2 and is drained by a pipe, not shown. In order that the whole of the surface of the heat exchangers contributes effectively to the heating, or cooling, of the room air, the overall height of the elements 14a, 14b is kept small. In a modification the pipe coils 16 are of flattened cross-section and are inclined to reduce the resistance to the flow of room air.
