Abstract

355,576. Ventilating buildings. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. and GROOM, S. L., 24, Buckingham Gate, London. Oct. 18, 1930, No. 31333. [Class 137.] A method of ventilating buildings, particularly multiple-storey buildings, consists in conditioning and circulating the air, which is withdrawn at floor level, independently in each part or storey and supplying to each part or storey fluids to effect a humidity or a humidity and heat exchange with the air and produce the desired local conditions. Each conditioning unit comprises a tower 1 through which air is drawn upwardly by a fan 3 and includes a spray chamber 12 having an air inlet through a pipe 13 protected by a cowl 14, a water eliminator 9 and an attemperating device 6 situated on the outlet side of the fan. Air from the room enters the bottom of the tower by way of a hit and miss regulator 15, 15a and passes through the spray chamber to the fan. By means of openings 7 controlled by baffles 8 the chamber may be byepassed, some of the air reaching the fan by way of an annular passage 22a formed between the tower and a surrounder casing 21. This passage is provided with an attemperating device 6c. When the tower is situated near an outer wall, a fresh air inlet 44 is provided. The upper wall of the tower is flared outwardly as at 16 and co-operates with a dished plate 17 to form a high velocity outlet, the air from which entrains and mixes with air drawn from the chamber 22a at 23. The spray chamber is provided at the bottom with sloping baffles 30 depending into the water, which baffles and the cowl 14 are covered by rubber or other sound deadening material. The water for the spray chambers of all the units is supplied by branch pipes, such as 26, 27, from mains in which a circulation is maintained by a pump, and may be heated or cooled according to whether the chambers are working as humidifiers or dehumidifiers. Similarly the attemperating devices 6, 6c are supplied with hot or cold water or with steam from a common source. Alternatively electric heaters may be used. The regulators 15, 15a, the baffles 8 and valves in the branch pipes supplying fluid to the spray chamber and the attemperating devices may be automatically operated by means of thermostats or hygrostats in the respective enclosures to produce the desired conditions. The unit may be utilized as a showcase, the casing 21 forming the back and being provided with a glass front 25.
