Abstract
1,118,352. Freeze drying. A/S ATLAS. 15 March, 1966 [18 March, 1965], No. 11181/66. Heading F4G. A freeze-drying apparatus comprises a cabinet 1 housing a drying chamber with heating plates 7 connectable by a hinged flap valve 10 to either of a pair of lower cooling chambers defined by partition walls 8, 9 from the drying chamber and having respective cooling coils 11, 12. The cooling chambers are selectively connectable by respective valved ducts 13, 14 to a vacuum source (not shown) so as to evacuate the drying chamber via one of the cooling chambers whilst maintaining the other cooling chamber under vacuum while melting the ice formed from condensed vapour therein by connection through valved pipes 17, 18 to a vapour generating means 21 outside the cabinet. The vapour generator is constructed as a heat exchanger and comprises a container 21 with water to a level 22 heated by a pipe 23 utilizing the medium used to cool the vacuum source or cooling coils, and the container is mounted beneath the cooling chambers to collect the melted ice. The flap valve and heating coils may be operated automatically by a timing mechanism.
