Abstract

28,952. Japy, P. A. J. E. Jan. 5, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. Fuel is supplied to the nozzle by an engine-driven pump, and the valve controlling the supply to the nozzle is worked by the outlet valve of the carburettor, the relative motion of the two valves being adjustable. The air inlets are of large area so that the pressure in the mixing-chamber is not below atmospheric pressure. Fig. 2 shows the. pump 4 supplying oil past a valve 9 to the nozzle 1, whence it is sprayed upon rotating vanes 28. The extremity 14 of the fuel valve spindle is worked from the outlet valve R, as shown in Fig. 3. A toothed sector 16 is rotated by gearing 19, 20 as the valve R is moved, and has pivoted to it a curved arm 15 pressing upon the spindle 14. In the position shown in full lines, the arm 15 is concentric with the sector, and will not affect the valve 9 ; but by the action of a hand-operated eccentric 25, the arm 15 can be adjusted to produce a greater or less depression of the valve 9 when the valve R is moved. The air inlets are shown at 0, Fig. 2. The Specification contains an explanation of the theoretical grounds for the construction adopted. The pressure in the mixing-chamber may under certain conditions be above atmospheric pressure. Instead of an engine-driven fuel pump, any device may be used that will increase either the pressure of the oil supply or the area of the nozzle, as the speed increases.
