Abstract
462,333. Spray carburetters. GRACE, C. J. Sept. 9, 1935, No. 25096. [Class 7 (iii)] A carburetter comprises an air-inlet valve adapted to be opened by engine suction and mechanically linked to a control for a fuel orifice, or orifices, to open or close it in correspondence with the air inlet valve, and a manually controlled fuel valve in the channel leading to the controlled fuel orifice, which limits the rate of feed of the fuel and accordingly serves as speed and power control device for the carburetter. As applied to a downdraught carburetter, fuel flow from a float chamber 1 is controlled first by a manually operated needle valve 7 before the fuel reaches a passage 8 leading to a second fuel valve 16 mounted on a piston 11 operating in a chamber 13 open to engine suction through a conduit 14. The conduit 14 opens adjacent a constriction in the mixing chamber, formed by a bullet-shaped air inlet valve integral with the piston 11, the suction thus controlling the fuel supply within the limit imposed by the valve 7. Fuel is sprayed from slots 19 between an annulus 18 and a lip on the wall of the mixing chamber opposite the base of the tapered nose of the air inlet valve. When used with a floatless carburetter, fuel is supplied under pressure and a byepass prevents a predetermined maximum pressure from being exceeded. Specification 392,929 is referred to.
