Abstract

662,598. Rotary pumps; centrifugal pumps. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1949 [Sept. 10, 1948], No. 22276/49. Classes 110(i) and 110(ii) [Also in Group XXVII] Regulating means to keep the inlet pressure constant, for a rotary, centrifugal, or reciprocating pump 10, comprises a valve 48 whose opening is controlled by a diaphragm 60. The latter is subjected to inlet pressure on its under-side, by way of passages 64, and spring pressure on its upper side. The pump, which may be a gear, reciprocating, centrifugal or another type, may be used to supply fuel for an internal-combustion engine by direct injection or manifold injection. The byepassed fluid passes through a duct 20, ports 40, 42 in a sleeve 44 and so to a chamber 62 open to the inlet port 12 when the valve 48 is open. When the inlet pressure falls, the pressure in a chamber 66 also falls, the diaphragm lowers and the valve 48 opens wider to allow more fluid to pass from duct 20 to duct 22 to raise the pressure there. A vent 78 leads to atmosphere or to a venturi tube in the induction passage of the engine so that, on an increase in air flow to the engine, the pressure in chamber 76 becomes lower, causing the diaphragm to move in a valve-closing direction.
