Abstract

2931. Ball, F. H., and Ball, F. O. Feb. 5. Spray carburettors.-The invention relates to carburettors in which a long tapered adjustable plug is situated in the petrol passage so as to control the fuel by virtue of the friction set up between the fuel film and the walls of the annular passage, and consists in preventing pulsations of the air valve and also in facilitating atomization of the fuel by means of a " carrier " formed on the tapered plug. Fuel from the float-chamber 11 flows to the nozzle outlet 10 through the narrow passage 8 between the adjustable conical plug 7 and the casing 9. The plug, which is pressed upwards by a spring 16, is adjusted by rotating a nut 27, which displaces a shaft 25 carrying an arm 18. The plug 7 has a carrier 6 upon which fuel is deposited. The float 34 actuates the valve 37 through a lever 35 and ball-and-socket joint 41. Air is admitted to the mixing-chamber 1 through a narrow uncontrolled opening 58 and also through an opening controlled by a valve 64. This valve is loaded by a spring 70, the compression in which is adjusted by a lever 87 and spindle 73. Pulsations of the valve are prevented by a dash-pot piston 92 which fits the cylinder 91 loosely so that the pressure above the piston approximates to the average pressure in the mixing-chamber. Initial openings of the valve 'are regulated by an annular rib 65. The throttle valve 2 is so placed as to facilitate mixing.
