Abstract
1406111 Surface carburetters E C COTTELL 25 July 1972 34627/72 Heading F1B A device for supplying air-fuel mixture to an I.C. engine comprises a housing 21 having a chamber 24 with an air inlet (chamber 22 and ports 26, 29,) an air fuel mixture outlet 37 and a sonic atomizer. The atomizer includes a sonic transducer 65, to which is attached a probe 45, having an atomizing tip 85, the probe 45 being surrounded by a fuel distribution member 60 to form an annular conduit 55, whose radially outward extent is substantially greater than the distance between its surfaces. Controlled amounts of liquid fuel are supplied to flow in a film across the surface 86 of the tip 85 to be atomized, the air fuel mixture formed being further mixed by acoustic energy radiated from the downstream surface 90 of the tip. The sonic transducer 65 comprises Piezo-electric ceramic plates 69, 71 or may be a magnetostriction transducer. Fuel and air are controlled by valves 61 and 40 connected to a throttle pedal (123), Fig.4 (not shown) by arms 47, 62. In Fig.10, fuel is supplied from conduit 354 via valve 358 and additional fuel is supplied via valve 398 responsive to pressure downstream of atomizing surface 348. Opening the throttle opens air valve 322, Fig.7, and opens valve 358 and supplies extra fuel from bellows 384 by the action of cam 392. When the throttle is closing, expansion of the bellows prevents fuel reaching the atomizing surface. At idling, if the engine begins to stall, manifold vacuum will fall causing valve 404 to open to supply extra fuel. The cam and follower 392, 382 may be replaced by a pressure type actuator to operate valve 376 in response to pressure in a Venturi upstream of air valve 322. The bellows 384 may be replaced by a piston and cylinder, as may the diaphragm 408. The apparatus can be used to mix jet fuel with air for combustion by a jet engine.
