Abstract

182,563. Thompson, T. April 5,1921. Variable-speed and reversing friction gearing comprises a disc f co-operating with a pair of rollers i, i<1> which grip the disc between them. The rollers i, i<1> are supported upon arms h, h<1> pivoting about shafts l, l<1> below the centre of the disc. The rollers i, i<1> are connected to the shafts l, l<1>, one or both of which transmits power, by toothed gear pairs j, k. Speed is varied by sliding the arms h, h<1> with the rollers and gears along the shafts l, l<1> so that the rollers move towards and from the centre of the disc. A second pair of rollers &c. i<2>, i<3> may be used alternatively for reversed driving, and toggles q, q<2> slidable on a spindle o may be employed to draw together the pair of arms h, h<1>, or the pair h<2>, h<3> so that the disc is gripped tightly by one pair or the other. A duplicated arrangement for driving screw propellers is described.
