Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act] Overlap joints with packinq at base or mouth. of socket.-In a pipe or like joint the ends of the pipes 1, 2, Fig. 1, formed with flanges 3, 4, carry rings 5, 6 drawn together by bolts 11, and the adjacent corners of the flange 3 and the portion 4' of the flange 4 are cut obliquely to form an annular passage 8<a>, an annular projection 9 being preferably formed on the ring 5. Packing-rings 7, 8 are inserted between the ends of the flanges 3, 4, and in the groove 8a respectively. In a modification, flanges 13, 14, Fig. 2, on the pipe 11<a>, 12, are embraced by a ring 23, adjacent corners of the flanges 13, 14 and ring 23 being cut obliquely to form annular grooves 18a in which are inserted packing-rings 18, annular projections 19 being preferably provided on the tightening- rings 15, 16. The pressure of the tightening- rings may be transmitted to the flanges through the packing-rings 8 or 18, in which case these rings are formed of comparatively solid material.
