Abstract

486,975. Stuffing-box packing. RAYBOULD COUPLING CO. Jan. 18, 1937, No. 1459. Convention date, Nov. 25, 1936. [Class 122 (v)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a stuffing-box joint a spacing ring 12 is inserted between the packing ring 6 and the base of the socket. The packing ring has annular recesses 13, 14 into which fit the gland ring 15 and spacing ring. Each corner of the packing ring is reinforced by split V-shaped rings 8 and wire rings 7. The ends of the wire rings are joined by a sleeve which may be of lead and placed in the slit of the V-ring, the sleeve being deformed to fill the slit when the V-ring is contracted. In the form of ring shown in Fig. 12, an additional split guard ring 20 surrounds the outer edges of the packing ring. If the spigot has an enlarged end 5, the packing and spacing rings are both split.
