Abstract

175,341. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Oct. 12, 1920. Butt joints; expansion joints; joints formed by welding.-In a pipe coupling, a mechanical connection is made between flanges 7, 8 on the ends of the pipes 5, 6 by means of bolts 11 and spacing-members 12 and a flexible sealing-joint is provided on the ends of the pipes which project beyond the flanges. The flexible joint may comprise a ring U-shaped in cross-section formed by providing annular grooves in the pipe ends, leaving two legs 13, 14 which are welded together at 15. In place of the welded joint, a ring, channelshaped in cross-section, is provided with projecting edges 17 fastened in grooves in the pipe ends. The grooves may be made larger than the edges of the ring, and the sides caulked down after the edges have been inserted.
