Abstract

Butt joints; spigot-and-socket joints with packing.-In a pipe joint comprising flanges or like coupling-members loosely mounted on the ends of the pipes to engage collars thereon, the collars are formed by folding back the end of each pipe so as to lie closely upon the outside of the pipe. The folded portions A<2> have rounded edges A<4>. The flanges C, C<2>, which are drawn together by bolts C<4>, are counterbored at C<3>, forming shoulders A<3>, B<3> which engage the ends of the collars. Joint rings H, Fig. 3, may be inserted at these places. A packing-ring D is arranged to seal the gap between the ends of the pipes, the ring being overlapped by the flange C in the construction shown in Fig. 1, and, in the modification shown in Fig. 3, being disposed in a recess formed in the flanges. The flanges are, in the latter case. provided with interengaging spigot and socket portions F<3>, F'. The joint shown in Fig. 3 allows for expansion of the pipes. In a modification of the construction shown in Fig. 1, the parts of the flanges through which the bolts C<4> pass are arranged at the ends of the flanges that are remote from each other, thus providing clearance for the nuts and allowing the bolts to lie near the pipes.
