Abstract
1329312 Taper rolling BRITISH STEEL CORP 13 Aug 1971 [14 Aug 1970] 39239/70 Addition to 1128102 Heading B3M A metal workpiece 1 is taper rolled by drawing it between a pair of rolls 5 while the gap between the rolls is varied according to a master profile 6 positioned remote from the rolls. The profile (which may be a tapered block, a punched card or tape, a magnetic tape or disc, or plug board connections) is scanned by a unit 7 which is coupled for movement with the workpiece as it is drawn between the rolls. The coupling may be mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic. A feedback loop may be provided between the scanner 7 and rolls; a signal corresponding to the roll gap is compared with one relating to the position of the scanner, and any difference between the signals is used to modify the roll gap. The rolls may be moved towards and away from each other either independently or in unison, and a further pair of rolls may be used to limit the lateral spread of the workpiece. Limit switches may be incorporated to govern the travel of the workpiece or the roll gap.
