Hollow bodies such as tubes A are cracked by burners 1, 2, followed by a mist quench from nozzles 3, 4 and atomizing air nozzles 5, 6. As shown, the burner assemblies are paired one inside and one out, and two pairs of assemblies may be utilized. Relative movement of the burner/nozzle assembly and the tube A is effected and cooling is normally after the gas supply to the burners 1, 2 has been cut off.
